Mueller フレンチプレスコーヒーメーカー

I just received this Mueller Soho French press that I ordered as a gift for my son. The style of the carafe holder is nice- that's why I ordered this Mueller. The carafe glass is solidly built, so I like the carafe part. But here's where I hate this Mueller as a French press. Clearly, the plunger is a retro fit as it does not belong with this carafe. What on earth is with the rubber ring??!! I get that without the rubber ring the metal plunger lid will crash down on the top of the glass carafe. So why not add a plastic collar on the underside of the plunger lid? This plunger lid also does not have the collar at all and therefore the steam from the brewing coffee is allowed to escape and cool the coffee. The poor design of this plunger lid being merely a metal disk with a retrofitted rubber ring is baffling.I will not return this Mueller even though I hate it. I will try to find another French press plunger and replace this stupid metal disk with a stupid rubber ring, and then give this French press as a gift. There is no way I can give this Mueller as a gift the way it is sold.Update: I bought a very nice Bodum and gave the Bodum as a gift instead of this ridiculous Mueller. I would like to hear from Mueller. I would like a replacement plunger sent to me. DO NOT send another plunger that is a simply a metal disk lid with a rubber ring. Also, the lid on the plunger needs a hard fitted gasket around the hole where the stem slides through the lid.
When I took the item out of the box, the rubber seal that is supposed to go around the lid was loose. I tried to put it back in place, but it was stretched out, apparently, because it wouldn't stay. it's not an integral part and I'm lazy about returns, so I was going to keep it anyway and deal with it. So I washed the item before use...and sliced my finger open on a sharp metal edge, badly enough that blood was dripping down my finger, and it bled enough that you can see the blood through the bandage because it soaked the pad. It's tough to explain, but on the underside of the top curve of the handle, the metal edges weren't lined up property with the plastic of the handle, so they stick out a millimeter or so. And they are thin metal so they are razor sharp. This is a part that would come into contact with a hand nearly every time the press was used to pour, so this is a huge problem. It's a craftsmanship issue. If everything would have been lined up correctly the metal would end at or just above the plastic, leaving no edge to come in contact with anything and it wouldn't be a problem, but this was slapped together with no concern for the details. The pieces weren't lined up properly, and it made a not-insignificant safety hazard. One side of the metal on the top sticks out further than the other. I actually got a pair of paralell cuts, but because one side sticks out less, one was far less deep. Anyway, between that and the seal, which arrived broken and is a terrible enough design that it would likely stretch and come off even if it had arrived in tact, I feel safe in saying this is a piece of junk. Yours might night have the same issues of mine, but with the slapped-together fabrication, there's a good chance it will have *some* issues. Skip this and find a different option.
Gonna start off with a warning because I don't recall reading it anywhere in their description or the manual: the glass cylinder (beaker) can be fully removed from the stainless sheath! When you get down to the bottom of the pot, for the love of all that's holy, place your finger on the plunger while tipping this vessel of boiling hot liquid! Ok, with that out of the way: Very nice for the price. The pic is of it in use so don't judge her too harshly! We got this for Xmas cuz my partner accidentally smashed the $9 one we had for 4yrs! The mueller one is sleek amp; fancy looking. The stainless/plastic handle apparatus is neat! I like that it has 4 screens in it amp; comes with replacements. It's german made steel (sheath) so it's definitely quality. HOWEVER, the plunger amp; lid? Particularly the plunger? Feels very cheap. The plunger amp; lid feel almost like plastic though I know it's not. It's some sort of cheap poured white metal. So while it looks really cool, I'll be interested to see how those hold up over time because in this house we use the press daily. Also if fingerprints bother you, the stainless sheath might drive you mad. I give this press a 4 out of 5 overall based on appearance, performance amp; price.
