I bought this turntable recently to round out a yearlong project to create a real "hifi" system. I'd spent a ton of hours finding the best bang for the buck components for my system, and did a considerable amount of DIY. Basically, getting to the end here, I was pretty tired :).After going back and forth I decided on the UTurn Orbit Plus. The turntable sounds great. I don't have much experience with other turntables, so other than "great," I can't really qualify my answers with any kind of tech. But there are plenty of more knowledgeable people on here that pretty much agree it's one of the best bang for the buck turntables you can get. What I do want to highlight, is that the customer service is EXCELLENT. I was having a slight issue with a light buzzing going on. UTurn was responsive, patient and diligent. They immediately asked a bunch of questions and tried to isolate the problem, sending me other components, until we were able to resolve it. Honestly in the end, I am fairly sure that the buzzing had to do with a ground connection on the speaker (the UTurn grounds through the left channel of your amp).I work with a ton of different companies in my work and in my life, and many of them will immediately try to shift blame off their products instead of working to a resolution. This is a huge turnoff. UTurn did the opposite and it makes a difference.
I absolutely love most everything this turntable except for one thing. The sound reproduction is great, the minimalism is wonderful, the price point is outstanding, I hate the belt on the outside. I have found that most of the time despite my best intentions, when turning a record over or picking up a record, I pull the belt (rubber band) off the platter. It isn't the end of the world but very annoying that I have to put the belt on over and over again. Can't the engineers make a little channel on the platter where the belt can reside? It would still look the same but the belt would stay in place.
This TT sounds amazing and it's backed by a great group of people.I hadn't listened to vinyl in many years, but I remember one of my friend's setups from way back when. The sound vinyl produces is so rich and full compared to digital formats. While a million times more convenient, the digital copies sound fine, but until I listened to some familiar music again on this TT, I forgot what I gave up for the convenience. I bought several brand new LPs to play on this TT, and I didn't play any of the scratchy old ones I had laying around. The sound from this TT is superior. At first I was very happy. However, I noticed a problem developing soon after: after about 15 minutes of listening there would come a distortion in the mid-range and it wouldn't go away until I let the TT "rest" for 20 minutes or so. After a while this was frustrating. I Google'd this, but couldn't find an article that covered this particular problem. I contacted U-turn directly thru their web-site and described this problem. I submitted the request over the holiday weekend, so I didn't expect a response until after the first of the year. However, Ben, one of the U-turn founders, replied within a few hours! He knew what the problem was and suggested how to fix it. I applied that fix (moved the counterweight back about 1-2mm) and lo-and-behold, the problem went away! Apparently this can be an issue with the OM5e cartridge.I was very pleased with this level of support; it's nice to know these folks are out there.
