Did you know that 8 million tons of plastic waste finds it’s way to the ocean every single year? Once in the ocean, these plastics can then take hundreds of years to break down thanks to the additives inside them to make them stronger, more flexible and durable. Don’t get me wrong, these are great qualities for a material use in our day to day lives… but not in a material which ends up in the ocean.
Plastic in the ocean not only disturbs the habitats of the sealife but many fish and animals accidentally consume the plastic, injuring or even killing them.
That’s why avoiding the use of single use disposable plastic can make a huge difference. One way to do this is by switching to using a reusable water bottle. Not only will this small change help to save the environment, it’s also better for you too! Here are four great reasons for using reusable water bottles:
1. It’s Better for your Health
It’s been suggested that avoiding single use water bottles is actually better for your health… that’s because the plastic used in these bottles contains chemical toxins such as BPA which can contribute to health problems and conditions.
A reusable bottle such as Hippo Bottles can replace a plastic bottle and can be used time and time again. Bottles like this are durable and often keep the water cool too – and we all know the benefits of staying hydrated, something which is super easy to do when carrying a fresh bottle of water with you. There are lots of different designs to choose from so you can choose a size and design which suits your style… or even have a couple to choose from throughout the week!
2. Protect Marine Life
By 2050 it’s said that there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish… that’s a scary thought. And the more plastic in the ocean, the more animals ingest it, causing injuries and death. The more the underwater ecosystem is disrupted by plastic, the bigger the effects on the land too. We rely on the ocean for food, but also oxygen too from coral reefs, and the more marine life that are killed by plastic, the more the coral reef dies.
Making a small simple change by using a reusable water bottle instead of single use plastic can really make a big difference.
3. Save Money
Instead of purchasing several bottles of water a day, using one reusable water bottle that you refill several times saves you a lot of money in the long run. Whilst a reusable water bottle may cost more upfront, you’ll be quids-in in no time when you stop buying single use water bottles. And every time you refill your water bottle, is one less plastic bottle in the ocean.
4. Preservation of Non-renewable Natural Resources
This might not be something that has even crossed your mind before… it definitely hadn’t crossed mine… but the creation and supply of plastic water bottles to consumers uses energy… energy such as oil which isn’t renewable. With oil reserves decreasing, the amount of energy we have available will also decrease and can be put to better use than creating plastic water bottles.
The manufacturing process also produces carbon dioxide which of course contributes to global warming, again affecting marine life due to rising sea temperatures.
More people are becoming aware of the problems that plastic causes in the environment and are starting to make small changes. If everyone made one small change, like the change to a reusable water bottle, this would make a big difference. So make the switch to a reusable water bottle today, for a better environment and better health.
